CSA Group Announces New Occupational Health And Safety Training Standard For Business

CSA Group, a leading developer of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards and training officially announces the launch of its Z1001 - Occupational Health and Safety Training standard to provide consistent quality occupational health and safety training for workers, managers, and supervisors, as well as for health and safety committees and representatives.

Each year, organizations in Canada make significant investments in providing OHS training to workers. While the value and importance of safety training is well-recognized, until now there were no general standards on this subject in Canada. Z1001 will help organizations invest their training resources appropriately and effectively.

This is the first edition of CSA Z1001, Occupational health and safety training. It specifies requirements for management and administration of OHS training, identification of OHS training needs, and outlines the development, implementation, and maintenance of an OHS training program and courses. It also specifies how to select training providers with the appropriate qualifications and the requirements for the design and delivery of OHS training courses.

Informative annexes provide guidance on how to implement the requirements of the standard, including topics to be covered in training for health and safety representatives and committee members; managers and supervisors; and new workers. Samples of a training matrix, course evaluation form, and training assessment survey are also included that can be customized for the specific needs of the user.

The Standard is designed to integrate with existing OHS management system elements and use of the Standard can assist organizations with labour mobility by helping to ensure that the quality of their OHS training is consistent across different jurisdictions in Canada. Decision-makers will be able to use this standard to help them evaluate OHS training services and products for their workers and to assist with the selection and evaluation of training providers.

By using CSA Z1001, Occupational health and safety training, organizations and OHS professionals will be able to audit their own training and qualifications for conformance with a nationally-recognized standard. Training providers will be able to demonstrate conformance with requirements in the Standard, which are based on best-practices to ensure effective outcomes.

The ANSI Z490-1 Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health, and Environmental Training standard was used as the seed document for the preparation of CSA Group Standard, with the permission of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Development of the Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of federal, provincial, and territorial OHS government agencies, the Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Legislation - OHS (CAALL-OSH), with additional contribution from the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE).

CSA is a leading organization in North America for Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards and provides the tools to make standards relevant in the workplace including: standards, guidelines, seminars, electronic tools and related offerings for frontline workers, managers and safety professionals. CSA has been developing OHS Standards since 1948 (beginning with its first standard on "protective equipment"). Today there are more than 170 CSA Group OHS standards, related products, and training seminars covering safety equipment, machinery, workplace environment, workplace practices, industrial hygiene, ergonomics and OHS management systems.
