Roster of Adjudicators Selected for Ratio Reviews and Compulsory Certification

The College of Trades has announced the Adjudicators for conducting and deciding the applications for compulsory certification and ratios. The full roster is viewable at College website at http://www.cot-appointments.ca/eng/RoA.BOARD%20MEMBERS.htm . Each panel will be comprised of a chair assigned from the Ontario Labour Relations Board and 2 private adjudicators from the trade sector being decided. The key attributes for adjudicators are the ability to make impartial decisions regarding ratios and compulsory certification and subject matter expertise.

ECAO was surprised to learn that a number of the 11 construction sector adjudicators have close ties to a coalition of associations bent on abolishing the College, including coalition leaders Clive Thurston of the Ontario General Contractors Association and Rob Bradford of Ontario Road Builders Association. The coalition has taken public, political stands against compulsory certification of trades, apprentice ratios and the College itself. ECAO believes that active “stakeholders” who have a demonstrable bias against the objectives of the College cannot possibly fulfill their obligation as impartial adjudicators. ECAO will be expressing its concern about the potential conflicts to the Appointment Council and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
