| I’m at George Brown College, taking the electromechanical engineering technician program. Once I graduate, I want to join the union as an apprentice Industrial Electrician. Is it possible to join the union as an industrial electrician? The ECAO/IBEW does not have a specific apprenticeship for the Industrial Electrician. However under their Industrial Commercial & Institutional program there is training involved in all these sectors. More information on the ECAO/IBEW apprenticeship programs can be obtained by going to our website at www.ecao.org and selecting Become an Electrician. To become an Industrial Electrician, usually an individual would have to find an employer to be indentured into the Industrial program. More information on this apprenticeship program can be researched with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities on their website at www.edu.gov.on.ca. The trade code designation with the Ministry for the Industrial Electrician trade is 442A. Last Updated: 2-2-2009 | Top

| In order to begin entry level employment as a first year apprentice, can I apply directly to companies represented by the ECAO or must I apply through the IBEW? To begin an apprenticeship in the unionized sector, you must apply to the apprenticeship council in your area. These apprenticeship councils are jointly managed by the Area Electrical Contractor Associations and the Local Unions. In some areas of the province, the joint apprenticeship council will accept an application from an employer that is willing to sponsor you. Contact your local apprenticeship council for further information. Visit the Become an Electrician section of the ECAO website for local apprenticeship council contacts. Last Updated: 6-9-2008 | Top

| My son has graduated from Loyalist College, Electrical Engineering Technician, Industrial but can't find any apprentiship positions, Any suggestions? There is no apprenticeship for an Electrical Engineering Technician. Once he has graduated from his college program he has his diploma in that field. If he is looking for an Industrial electrical apprenticeship specifically he would have to search the job ads either on-line or through the local newspapers.
